Gadsden Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Nov. 9.

Gadsden, Ala. —Gadsden State Community College is hosting a free healthy living event, which is open to the public.

“How to Improve Your Health” will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Learning Resource Center on Gadsden State’s Valley Street Campus. Quality of Life Health Services Inc. will have its Express Mobile Unit at the event for free health screenings. Quality of Life is a system of federally-qualified community health centers that is co-sponsoring the event with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Gadsden State’s HBCU Title III Program.

“Alabama has the fourth highest heart disease mortality rate in the country,” said Kimberly Campbell-Dixon, retention advisor for the HBCU Title III Program. “We have the fifth highest rate for adult obesity with over 36 percent of the population being considered obese. It is time we all take control of our health.”

Alabama is above the national rate in deaths caused by cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, septicemia and kidney disease.

“No other state in the U.S. has more deaths caused by stroke than Alabama,” she said. “There are preventative measures people can take to decrease their risk of heart disease and stroke. Improving one’s health should be a priority. We intend for this event to help people to start a healthier lifestyle.”
