Gadsden Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 18.
Gadsden, AL (September 13, 2019) – All media are invited to attend a press conference on Monday, September 23, 2019 in the library of the Gadsden City High School beginning at 3:30 pm for an announcement concerning the progress of funding and critical volunteer needs for an upcoming free weekend of medical care for residents of the Gadsden and Etowah County area.
Remote Area Medical- RAM® - a major non-profit provider of mobile clinics delivering free, high-quality, dental, vision and medical care to underserved and uninsured individuals – will be in Gadsden on March 27-29, 2020. Services available at the clinic will include dental cleanings, fillings, x-rays and extractions, eye exams with prescription eyeglasses made on-site, and gynecological and general medical exams. All services are free of charge and no identification is required.
The Remote Area Medical clinic is being hosted by East Central Alabama Area Health Education Center (AHEC). AHEC was established in 1971 to increase the quality, diversity and distribution of healthcare professionals especially in rural and underserved areas. In 2012, the University of Alabama in Birmingham launched the AHEC program in Alabama. The East Central Alabama district office serves 16 counties in the state. According to Angela Anderson, executive director of the district, Etowah County will be the first community host group for the RAM Mobile Medical Clinic in the state of Alabama.
